BLOG ECO 12/07/2011: Ioannis

Hola everybody!!!
I'm Ioannis from Cyprus and i was one of the volunteers in the research project in the strait of the Gibraltar, during 2 weeks in June. Conservation, Information and Research on Cetaceans (CIRCE). The title for many people means, the protection of the cetaceans and the collection of data in the strait of Gibraltar for several of reasons. For me, it means also a lot of other things, as I experienced one of the most extraordinary happenings that occur in marine life. I'm studying Biology and i hope in the future to proceed my studies in Marine Biology. Moreover, i would like to continue my studies in marine mammals just like the Researchers of CIRCE, who try so hard to bring these amazing creatures to the surface of the people's minds. Moreover, i would like to continue my studies in marine mammals just like the Researchers of CIRCE, who try so hard to bring these amazing creatures to the surface of the people's minds. Many of these incredible creatures die due to
collision with huge Cargo Ships. This is one of the phenomena that occur in the strait of Gibraltar, and people from CIRCE through their hard work try to stop this madness, as for me, it counts as a human murder. General, during boat research we had to track marine mammals and once we found them we had to collect as many pictures as we could, to count the population. Any missing individual could mean its migration or even its unknown cause of death (which could be possibly caused by human hand!!!). Moreover, a sample of skin could also be collected from whales such as Balaenoptera physalus (Fin Whale) and then, further studies of this individual could be carried on, through biopsy. I still remember the big BLOW of the Fin whale! Yes! We were chasing it to get a sample of its skin! Even though it made our lives difficult we managed to collect it and see the second largest animal in the world. I have no words to describe the moment, as you have to be there and see it live! The only thing I can say is, I can still see it happening in my mind!!!
I have really enjoyed my stay, in the boat (while researching) with amazing sunrise and sunsets, in the office, where we learned lots of interesting facts and during our nights out in Spain! The whole volunteering was one of the best things that happened in my life, and I will continue to volunteer, to do our best to save and answer many questions about the Marine mammal's life. No one gave us the right to kill or be destroyers of this amazing world we live. Whoever brought us here, he/she/it wants us to share this world with all the creatures of the planet and not being their murderers or Rulers.
